Aventura has finally chosen its roster of ambassadors for 2015. We have added 7 new ladies and brought back 10 ambassadors from last year. For the next few weeks we will introduce one ambassador a week so that we can all get to know more about who they are, where they come from and what they are up to! We hope you enjoy getting to know these wonderful and talented women.
This week we asked Alyssa Erikson from The Kid Project, to answer a few questions for us:
What is your favorite outdoor activity and why?
I agree with my husband who recently said, “I think you weremade for winter.” I love the snow and the mountains and pretty much any way of traveling in them. So I guess I’d have to say my favorite outdoor activity is skiing and most recently, backcountry skiing or touring. It helps that I started skiing at age 2, so I feel more coordinated on skis than on my own feet! In my opinion, the mountains draped in snow, can not be rivaled by any other view.
Spring is almost here, what is your favorite summer activity?
I love backpacking in the summer and I start planning multi-day trips before it even stops snowing. Backpacking has bonded me with other women, taken me to amazing summits, into remote cirques and to epic swimming holes. It has become my favorite summer activity because it (often) helps us escape the heat and it is something my whole family (kids ages 4,6, and 8) can do together.
What is one accomplishment in the last year that you are most proud of?
A few years ago we decided we needed to figure out this whole “outdoor lifestyle” and “having kids” thing. So many people told us our adventures would have to end. Instead, we started a journey (and a blog, www.kidproject.org) trying to figure out how to bring them along. This last year I felt the “fruition” of this endeavor. All our kids are excelling at backpacking, can hike longer miles now (up to about 10 miles in a day) are all decent skiers, and most of all they love it! We still have a long way to go, but for the first time I am seeing the benefit to all those years on the “bunny slope”.
One place you’ve never been that you would love to go to one day and why?
We are currently planning one of my “bucket list” trips to Supai village, located in Havasu Canyon just south of the Colorado River in Arizona. It is an 8 mile hike into the village, and another 2 miles further to the campground. Supai is only accessible by trail or helicopter and the only place in the United States where postal delivery is by mule.
Who has been the biggest inspiration for you to live an active lifestyle?
My husband and adventure partner, Chris, is my biggest inspiration, motivator, and dream-encourager. His own enthusiasm for setting goals and achieving them has been contagious in our whole family. It started me running, it led me to do a triathlon, and invites me daily to dream about bigger goals on the horizon.
